Snapchat Video Download 2026: Spotlight, Stories & Chats
To download a public Snapchat video in 2026, copy the Spotlight or public Story link and paste it into a web downloader that supports it: free, no login. Videos friends send you in chat have no link, so no downloader can grab them. Here’s what works instead.
- Public videos (Spotlight, public Stories, Highlights): paste the link into a downloader. No login.
- Videos friends send you in chat: SnapNinja, connected to your Snapchat, saves the original file with no screenshot alert. Save it before you open it.
- Your own videos: Snapchat’s Save button and Memories export.
Updated November 2026 for the current Snapchat app on iPhone and Android.

7 ways to download and save Snapchat videos
Here’s how each one holds up.
1. How to download a Snapchat video from a link
This is the route for Spotlight and public Stories.
- Copy the link. On the Spotlight video or public Story, tap Share (or the three dots), then Copy Link. Public links look like snapchat.com/spotlight/… or snapchat.com/add/username.
- Paste it into a downloader. Use a downloader that supports that public Story or Spotlight link, and paste it in.
- Download the MP4. It saves to your phone or computer.
Reliability: works for public content, when the site supports the link you paste. Expect ads and pop-ups on most of these sites, and never give one your Snapchat password.
Good to know:
- No notification. You’re not signed in to Snapchat, so there’s nothing to alert the creator.
- Watermarks. Snapchat’s own share and save options can add a logo or username. Results from downloader sites vary.
- Expired Stories are gone. Stories usually expire after 24 hours, though the duration can vary. Highlights stay up as long as the creator keeps them.
- Private accounts and friends-only Stories have no public link, so no downloader can fetch them. More on saving Snapchat stories.
None of these sites can download a video a friend sent you, whatever their homepage implies. Here’s why.
2. Snapchat’s own save options
- Your own snaps: tap Save before sending, or choose where tapping Save puts your snaps: Memories, Camera Roll, or both.
- Save in Chat: press and hold a video in a chat to save it there, then save it to your camera roll from the chat.
Reliability: fine for your own videos. For a friend’s video, Save in Chat only works on videos set to loop (photos need to be sent with no time limit), and the saved video is highlighted for both of you. It’s the official route, and it’s the opposite of private.
3. SnapNinja: save chat videos as the original file
SnapNinja is a cloud service you use from your phone’s browser. You connect your own Snapchat account, see the unopened snaps friends have sent you, and tap Save on the videos you want. SnapNinja’s servers copy the original video file, with its sound, into your private online gallery. Nothing is screenshotted or screen recorded, so Snapchat has no screenshot alert to send.
The video they sent you at 1am that you want to keep, not just watch once: that’s what SnapNinja is for.
Reliability: the only method on this list that gets you the original file of a chat video with no screenshot alert. It’s how you save videos friends send you, in original quality. The rule is order: save it in SnapNinja before you open it on your phone. Connecting is free; saving is $29.99/month or $199/year. Full walkthrough below.
4. A second phone
Play the video on your phone and film the screen with another phone.
Reliability: no alert, because Snapchat can’t see a camera that isn’t your phone. But you get glare, moiré lines, wobble and room-noise audio, and you need the second device ready before you open the snap. You usually get one look plus one Replay (Snapchat+ subscribers can replay again), and the sender can see that you replayed it.
5. Screen recording
iPhone’s Screen Recording and Android’s screen recorder capture the video and its sound.
Reliability: yes, it alerts the sender. So does screen mirroring or casting the video to another screen, and so does screen-capturing a chat video in Snapchat Web on a computer. Fine for your own content. Details in screen recording on Snapchat.
6. The airplane mode trick
Load the snap, switch on airplane mode, open it, capture it, then clear the cache before reconnecting.
Reliability: yes, it alerts the sender. The alert arrives when you reconnect.
7. Modded Snapchat apps and “saver” apps
Tweaked Snapchat clients and APKs promise a hidden save button inside the app.
Reliability: they no longer work. Snapchat++, SnapEnhance, Phantom and similar mods are patched or gone, saver apps are dead too, and Snapchat locks accounts caught using them. See our rundown of third-party Snapchat apps and apps to screenshot Snapchat.
Why no downloader can grab a video sent to you
This is the part every “Snapchat video downloader” site skips.
Spotlight and public Stories live at a public web address, which is why pasting a link works. A video a friend sends you in chat doesn’t. It sits in your conversation and can only be reached by someone logged in to your account. There’s no link to copy and nothing for a paste-a-link tool to fetch.
So any tool that saves chat videos has to sign in to Snapchat as you. One that claims to do it without your login is either public-only or doesn’t work.
SnapNinja is upfront about being in the “needs your login” group. You connect by entering your Snapchat username and password in SnapNinja. Here’s what happens to them:
- Your login is encrypted on your device before it’s sent.
- It’s used only by SnapNinja’s connection server, to sign in to Snapchat for you.
- It’s deleted once connecting finishes. After that SnapNinja keeps an encrypted Snapchat session, not your password.
- You can disconnect anytime.
That login is why SnapNinja can reach your chat videos at all, and why it gets the original file instead of a recording of your screen. How SnapNinja works has the technical version.
How to save Snapchat videos friends send you with SnapNinja
- Sign in with Google. Free, no card.
- Connect your Snapchat. Enter your Snapchat username (or email) and password. If Snapchat asks you to approve the login in the Snapchat app, tap approve. If Snapchat blocks the connection attempt, wait a bit and try again.
- See what’s waiting. Your inbox lists the unopened photo and video snaps in your one-on-one and group chats, plus photos and videos someone saved in a chat. You see who sent each one, when, and whether it’s a video. This part is free.
- Subscribe and tap Save. Saving needs a plan: $29.99/month or $199/year for unlimited saves (fair use: 1,000 a month). Tap Save on an individual video, or use Save all / Save loaded in a conversation.
- Wait for it to land in Saved. Check that the video shows up in your Saved tab before you touch the snap in Snapchat. A save can fail if the snap is gone or the connection drops, so don’t skip this check.
- Now open it on your phone. Open the snap in Snapchat as normal. The sender sees “Opened” like any other snap, but you already have the original.
- Download it. While subscribed, download the original video from Saved, then save it to your camera roll (on iPhone it goes to Files first; see below).

The order is everything: save in SnapNinja first, then open it on your phone. Once a snap is opened on your phone it drops off SnapNinja’s list, and opened or expired snaps can’t be recovered. Videos saved in a chat are the exception: they stay saveable because they’re still sitting in the conversation.
What you get:
- The real video file, in the quality it was sent, with its original sound.
- Multi-clip videos kept together. When Snapchat splits a longer video into several clips, SnapNinja groups them and saves them together.
- Photos too. The same tap saves photo snaps. It doesn’t save chat text, friends’ Stories or Memories.

How to download your own Snapchat videos
Saving your own snaps never notifies anyone.
- One at a time: tap the download arrow before you send, or save the snap to Memories and export it to your camera roll from there.
- Choose where tapping Save puts your snaps: in Snapchat, go to Settings > Memories > Save Button and pick Memories, Camera Roll, or both.
- Everything at once: request your data from your Snapchat account settings and download your Memories in bulk. Step by step in how to export Snapchat Memories.
How to download Snapchat videos on a computer (Snapchat Web)
Snapchat Web lets you chat from a browser, but it isn’t a video downloader, and screen-capturing a chat video there alerts the sender just like on your phone. To keep a video as a file on your computer, use one of these routes. More on what it can do in how to use Snapchat on a computer.
- Public videos: paste the link into a downloader in any desktop browser.
- Chat videos: SnapNinja runs in any browser, so the same account works on your laptop. Nothing to install.
iPhone and Android: where your downloads end up
iPhone: in Safari, a downloaded MP4 usually goes to the Files app (Downloads folder) first. Open it, tap Share, then Save Video to put it in Photos. More on saving snaps on iPhone.
Android: downloads land in your Downloads folder and normally show up in your gallery right away.
SnapNinja runs in Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android. No App Store app, no jailbreak, no second device.
Is it safe?
Downloader sites. Fine for public videos if you skip their pop-ups and never give one your Snapchat password.
Modded apps. These are the real risk. They’re patched or gone, and Snapchat locks accounts caught using them.
SnapNinja. You keep using the normal Snapchat app on your phone; SnapNinja signs in from its own servers. Automated access isn’t something Snapchat endorses. We haven’t observed bans, but we can’t promise zero risk. Two notes:
- Snapchat’s approve-in-app login prompt is supported. Accounts that use SMS or authenticator codes for login verification aren’t supported yet.
- Your saved gallery is available while you’re subscribed, so download anything you want to keep before you cancel.

Frequently asked questions
Can you download Snapchat videos?
Yes. Public Spotlight videos and Stories download free by copying the link into a web downloader, usually as an MP4. Your own videos save through Snapchat’s Save button and Memories. For videos friends send you, SnapNinja is the tool that works today: it connects to your account and saves the original video file.
How do I download Snapchat videos from other people’s Stories?
If the Story is public, copy its link (Share > Copy Link) and paste it into a downloader. Friends’ private and Close Friends Stories have no public link, so no public tool can download them, and SnapNinja doesn’t save them.
If I save a video on Snapchat, will they know?
If you use Save in Chat, yes: the video is highlighted as saved for both of you. Screen recording, screen mirroring and the airplane mode trick alert the sender too. Only two ways don’t: filming the screen with a second phone, which looks poor, and SnapNinja, which saves the original video file without capturing the screen, so there’s no screenshot alert.
What does it mean when someone saves your snap in chat?
They kept it in the conversation instead of letting it disappear. It stays in the chat, highlighted as saved, until one of you unsaves it. To save a snap or message in your own chat, press and hold it and tap Save in Chat.
Why won’t Snapchat let me download a video?
Snapchat only lets you save a friend’s video after it’s been saved in chat, and Save in Chat only works on videos set to loop. For your own videos, check where your Save Button points under Settings > Memories.
Can I download expired Snapchat Stories?
No. Once a Story expires (usually after 24 hours) it’s gone, unless the creator added it to a Highlight. The same goes for chat snaps that were opened or expired.
Do I need to log in to my Snapchat account?
Not for public videos. For videos sent to you in chat, yes: they’re only reachable from your account, which is why SnapNinja connects with your Snapchat login.
Is there a Snapchat saver app?
SnapNinja saves videos friends send you, and it’s the only one that works today: modded apps and other saver apps are patched or gone. It isn’t an App Store app: it runs in your phone’s browser, so there’s nothing to install. Connecting and seeing what’s waiting is free; saving is $29.99/month or $199/year.
