How to Use Snapchat on a Computer (PC, Mac & Web, 2026)
Yes, you can use Snapchat on a computer. Go to web.snapchat.com in Chrome, Edge or Safari, log in with your Snapchat username and password, and approve the login on your phone if Snapchat asks. It’s free. On Windows you can also install Snapchat from the Microsoft Store.
One limit to know up front: on a computer you can chat, call and send snaps, but the snaps friends send you generally still open on your phone, not on the web.
Updated November 2026 against Snap’s current help pages for Snapchat Web on Windows, Mac and Chromebook.
What you can and can’t do on a computer
| Feature | Snapchat Web / Windows app | Phone app |
|---|---|---|
| Chat (text, emoji, stickers) | Yes | Yes |
| Voice and video calls | Yes | Yes |
| Send a snap with your webcam | Yes | Yes |
| Send a photo from your files in chat | Yes | Yes |
| Open snaps friends send you | Generally no, open them on your phone | Yes |
| Lenses | Some, on webcam snaps | Full set |
| Watch Stories and Spotlight | Rolling out, check yours | Yes |
| Post to your Story | Video only, through Snap’s web uploader | Yes |
| Memories | No | Yes |
| Account settings | Yes, at accounts.snapchat.com | Yes |
Snap has added features to the web version over time. Its help pages now list Safari alongside Chrome and Edge, so older guides that say “Safari doesn’t work” are out of date. Stories and Spotlight are reported in newer versions of the web client, but not every account sees them yet. If a feature is missing for you, update your browser first.
Method 1: Snapchat Web, step by step
This works on Windows, Mac and Chromebook. You don’t need Snapchat+: Snapchat Web launched as a Snapchat+ perk in 2022, but Snap’s current help pages list no subscription requirement.
- Open web.snapchat.com in an up-to-date Chrome, Edge or Safari. Snap doesn’t list Firefox, and Firefox users report it doesn’t load properly.
- Log in with your Snapchat username (or email) and password.
- Approve the login if Snapchat asks. Snapchat may send a push notification to the app on your phone asking you to confirm it’s you. If it does, approve it to finish logging in, or enter the code if it asks for one.
- Allow camera and microphone when your browser asks. You only need this for snaps and calls; chat works without it.
- Pick a conversation from the list on the left and start chatting.
Two things that catch people out:
- One computer at a time. Per Snap, logging in on a new computer logs you out of the old one. Your phone stays logged in, so you can use the phone and the web side by side.
- The privacy screen. Snapchat Web blurs the conversation when you click into another window. Click back in to unblur it. It’s deliberate, not a bug.
Method 2: install Snapchat like an app
You don’t need a sketchy “Snapchat for PC” download. There are two clean ways to give Snapchat its own window and taskbar or Dock icon.
Windows: the Microsoft Store app
Search “Snapchat” in the Microsoft Store and install the listing from Snap Inc. It’s a progressive web app: the same web version in its own window, with the same features and the same limits. Skip .exe installers from download sites.
Any computer: install it from Chrome or Edge
Open web.snapchat.com, then look for the install icon at the right of the address bar (or the browser menu > “Install Snapchat” / “Apps”). You get a desktop shortcut that opens Snapchat Web without the browser tabs. To remove it, right-click the shortcut or use the browser’s apps page.
Mac
There’s no native Snapchat app for macOS. Use Safari or Chrome, and install it from Chrome if you want an icon in the Dock.
How to send a snap from your computer
- Open a chat on Snapchat Web.
- Click the capture button (the lens icon at the bottom of the screen) to take a photo, or press and hold it to record a video. Your webcam turns on.
- Add a Lens or caption if you want, and send.
No webcam? You can attach a photo or video from your computer in the chat instead. Expect it to arrive as a chat attachment rather than a classic camera snap, and check how it looks on the other end the first time.
How to post to your Story from a desktop
The chat window is built for messaging, not posting. To post from a computer, use Snap’s web uploader. Per Snap’s help center:
- Go to profile.snapchat.com in your desktop browser and sign in with your Snapchat username and password.
- Drag your video onto the upload area, or click Choose video.
- Under Send to, tick My Story.
- Agree to the Creator Terms.
- Click Post to Snapchat.
The requirements:
- Video only. Photos aren’t covered.
- 5 to 60 seconds long.
- At least 540×960 resolution.
- 9:16 crop. Snapchat crops your video to 9:16, so frame it vertically.
Snap files the uploader under Spotlight in its help center, but its published steps cover My Story only. If you want to post to Spotlight, check the Send to options in the uploader. For filters, Lenses and the full editing tools, post from your phone.
Can you open snaps on a computer?
Generally not through Snapchat Web. When a friend sends you a photo or video snap, users report the web version shows it arrived, but you open it on your phone. Snap’s web help covers chatting, calling and sending snaps, not opening the ones you receive.
Want the snaps friends send you on your computer instead of stuck on your phone? Save them with SnapNinja and you get the original files, with no screenshot alert. There’s nothing to install: it’s a cloud service you use from your phone’s browser, and your gallery opens in any browser.
- Connect your Snapchat. Enter your Snapchat login in SnapNinja’s form. If Snapchat sends an approve-in-app prompt, approve it on your phone. Accounts that need an SMS or authenticator code aren’t supported yet. SnapNinja then lists the unopened photo and video snaps in your chats, plus photos and videos saved in chat.
- Tap Save before you open the snap on your phone, then open it in Snapchat as normal once it’s in your Saved tab.
- SnapNinja copies the original file to your private online gallery. No screenshot is taken, so there’s no screenshot alert to send. While you’re subscribed, you can open your gallery in any browser and download the originals, to this computer too. Download anything you want to keep before your subscription ends.
It saves photos and videos only, not chat text or friends’ Stories. Snapchat doesn’t endorse third-party access, so there’s some account risk. Connecting is free. Unlimited saves are $29.99/month or $199/year (fair use: 1,000 a month).

Snapchat Memories on a computer
Memories aren’t in Snapchat Web. To get them onto your computer, request your data from Snapchat’s account settings and download the Memories export. Our guide to exporting Snapchat Memories walks through it.
Does Snapchat Web notify when you take a screenshot?
Yes. A screenshot or screen recording of Snapchat Web on a computer alerts the sender, just like on a phone. Snap built the web version to discourage screenshots, which is why it blurs when the window loses focus. Mirroring your phone to the computer (iPhone Mirroring, Phone Link and similar) and capturing it alerts the sender too, and so does the airplane-mode trick: the alert arrives when you reconnect.
Only two ways don’t alert the sender: photographing the screen with a second phone, which works but gives poor quality, and SnapNinja, which saves the original file and never takes a screenshot. For more on what triggers an alert, see screenshotting on Snapchat and our rundown of apps to screenshot Snapchat.
Other ways to use Snapchat on a PC (and what to skip)
- iPhone Mirroring (Mac). Recent macOS versions can mirror and control your iPhone from your Mac, which puts the full Snapchat app on your screen because it’s your actual phone. A screenshot or recording of the mirrored screen still alerts the sender.
- Phone Link (Windows). On supported Android phones, Phone Link can mirror your phone’s apps to your PC. Same idea, same rule: capture the mirrored screen and the sender gets the alert.
- Android emulators (BlueStacks and similar). Snapchat commonly blocks them, the emulator tricks for saving snaps are patched, and Snapchat locks accounts caught using them. Not worth it.
- Dead methods. Snap Camera, the Andy emulator, ARC Welder and Windows Subsystem for Android are all discontinued, whatever older guides say.
- “Snapchat for PC” .exe files and extensions. Fake clients and unofficial plugins are a common way to lose an account. Modded and third-party apps for saving snaps are patched or gone, and Snapchat locks accounts caught using them. More in the risks of third-party Snapchat apps.
Snapchat Web not working? Quick fixes
- Use a supported browser (Chrome, Edge or Safari) and update it.
- Update the Snapchat app on your phone, then try the login again.
- Watch your phone for a login approval prompt. If Snapchat sends one, approve it to finish logging in.
- Turn off ad blockers, script blockers and VPNs for snapchat.com.
- Clear cookies for snapchat.com, or try a private window.
- Close duplicate tabs and other computers signed in to Snapchat Web.
- Check camera and mic permissions in your browser’s site settings if calls or snaps fail.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use Snapchat on a laptop?
Yes. Open web.snapchat.com in Chrome, Edge or Safari on any Windows laptop, MacBook or Chromebook, log in, and approve on your phone if asked.
Is there a Snapchat app for PC or Mac?
On Windows, yes: Snap’s app in the Microsoft Store, which is the web version in its own window. There’s no native Mac app; use Safari or Chrome.
Is Snapchat Web free?
Yes. You don’t need Snapchat+. Older articles saying otherwise date from the 2022 launch.
If I log into Snapchat on my computer, will it notify my phone?
It can. Snapchat may send a push notification asking you to approve the login, and it may also flag a new device sign-in.
Can I use Snapchat on my phone and computer at the same time?
Yes. Your phone stays logged in. Per Snap, you can only be signed in to Snapchat Web on one computer at a time.
Can I open snaps on my laptop?
Generally not on Snapchat Web; received snaps open on your phone. To get the snaps friends send you onto your laptop as original files, with no screenshot alert, save them in SnapNinja before you open them, then download them from your gallery in any browser.
Can you send snaps on a computer without a camera?
You can send a photo or video file in a chat, but it usually arrives as a chat attachment, not a camera snap.
Can you watch Stories on Snapchat Web?
Newer versions are reported to show Stories and Spotlight, but it depends on what Snap has rolled out to your account. Public profiles on snapchat.com usually show a creator’s public Stories and Spotlight without logging in.
Can you post to your Story from a computer?
Yes, video only. Use Snap’s uploader at profile.snapchat.com: 5 to 60 seconds, at least 540×960, cropped to 9:16.
Can you make video calls on Snapchat Web?
Yes. Voice and video calls work once you allow your camera and microphone.
Can I see my Snapchat Memories on a computer?
Not in Snapchat Web. Download them with Snapchat’s data export (steps in the Memories section above).
Can I download videos from Snapchat Web?
There’s no download button for snaps friends send you. See how to download Snapchat videos for what does work.
Is it safe to use an emulator for Snapchat?
No. Snapchat commonly blocks emulators, the emulator tricks for saving snaps are patched, and Snapchat locks accounts caught using them. Snapchat Web or the Microsoft Store app gets you the same chat features with none of that risk.
The short version
Snapchat on a computer means Snapchat Web: free, in Chrome, Edge or Safari, or as the Microsoft Store app on Windows. It’s great for chatting, calls and webcam snaps, and you can post video to your Story through Snap’s uploader. Opening the snaps friends send you generally still happens on your phone.
Keep the snaps friends send you as original files, with no screenshot alert:
